The past, the present and persistence: The story of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres have had a long and storied history. From their glory days as a Vaudeville roadhouse to an MGM movie palace to their near demise and multi-million-dollar rebirth. Persistence is what has kept this “double-decker” theatre going since 1913.
Owned and operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust, we’ll further investigate into the Elgin and Winter Garden story and recount many interesting facts. For instance, how many times has the Elgin changed its name and what precious artifact was lost in the theatre’s fire. We’ll also share secrets of The Winter Garden, like why was bread dough so important to the restoration project and what was found backstage undisturbed for over 60 years.
Known for her comprehensive “walk-thru” theatre tours, Ellen Flowers, Marketing & Communications Manager will switch it up and present a “talk-thru” slide show. Join us as we travel through the years of this celebrated building.
